What are AOA’s SELF PORTRAIT THANK YOU CARDS?
—and why are they important?
Each year we have our Cartoon Students (grades 3-5) at Laurel Elementary School draw their own self portrait on the front of a Thank You Card they write.
Inside the card, we ask them to do 3 things:
1 Tell us one thing they liked about the Cartoon Classes we gave them
(so we can improve our classes).
2. Tell us 1 thing they learned in the Cartoon Classes
(this makes them REFLECT upon what they DID learn).
3. Thank Artists of America (as a proxy for our wonderful supporters who make these classes possible).
This is very important, because we are teaching the children GOOD MANNERS. This may be the first and only thank you card some of these children have ever written.
This year, Jerry’s Artarama Art Supplies donated the Strathmore Card Stock that our children drew their Self Portrait Thank you Cards on!
We wish to thank Ira Goldstein, and all of the staff at Jerry’s Artarama http://www.jerrysartarama.comfor their support for our classes.
On a personal note, Diedre Burke (AOA President & Founder) has shopped Jerry’s Artarama http://www.jerrysartarama.com for her own personal and classroom art supplies, because if she needs it, Jerry’s has it!

Each month we will feature 3 new cards done by our 2009-2010 students at Laurel Elementary.
It is interesting to see how each child sees himself or herself, you will note they are not doing a “generic” drawing of a person—they are drawing their own self portrait!
Can you get a feeling for the personality of each child?
